Ever since she was shot in the head by Alice Sands Annabeth Gish , Maura has been suffering from subdural hematoma. Because of this, her impressive brain has not been functioning as it usually does. Maura keeps on forgetting the simplest details and her colleagues are all sorry to see her struggle. Kent Adam Sinclair eventually suggested that she should see a doctor.
He even provided a list of neurosurgeons who could do the job, but Maura was still hesitant to do so. She said she was not afraid of the actual surgery, but of the results after. What if her condition does not improve? Maura tells her to get an appointment to meet with her, but Hope ignores her and goes to meet her anyway. Maura asks her to leave though.
During the chaos of the building collapse, Hope comes to help the injured. At the end of the episode, Maura agrees to give Cailin her kidney, but only if Hope promises to never tell her. No More Drama in My Life. She shows the same level of compassion for her job as her daughter Maura, both believing that they are incapable of saving people but can speak for the dead with their profession.

She has a great sense of balance in her life. I felt really compelled to find the resemblance between the characters. I mean, we look alike which was helpful and kind of stunning how much we did favor each other but the physical behaviors is what I found really interesting. To observe her as an actor and try to incorporate that into some of my own characterizations.
It was also really fun to watch Angie Harmon and Lorraine Bracco together.
